The Economy changed a lot since the 1950’s. The article that I read was showing how the amount of people increases by 3.28% every year. Democrats have been taking over the White House longer than the Republicans have occupied it. GDP or The total market value of all final goods and services produced in a country in a given year, equal to total consumer, investment and government spending, plus the value of exports, minus the value of imports. America has been expanding; this can be a good factor in some cases. Since America is producing more people there can be more soldiers for the war. During that time the Cold War was going to begin. More responsibilities come upon the president now, than it was in the 1950s. More people mean more responsibility. In the second article I chose it was about how segregation changed since the 1950s. African Americans were treated very poorly as we know. They couldn’t go to certain restaurants, schools, water fountains, or have certain jobs because of their skin color. Now African Americans have showed that they are as smart and can be successful as any other race. African Americans now achieve great success, being rich, and making a change in other people’s lives. The article showed how African Americans are joined in more jobs, sports, colleges, and businesses. The Economy has changed from the 1950s for the better.
Both articles state a lowering of the unemployment rate but as we all know this rate is at a slow and steady pace, but not to the blame of any one. Economic recovery was so fast and great in early recessions because of a more factory and industrial push. During WW2 our factories opened their doors to a whole new work force, women and African Americans. This not only supplied a substantial amount of jobs but also spending, now women were a huge target of marketing. A large way to improve economy is not to hoard your money but spend it, not in a crazy way. When people refrain from doing things they usually do it doesn’t help anyone but them, say they went mini golfing every Saturday, that five dollars went towards someone’s paycheck, now say a whole bunch of people stopped golfing at the same mini golf course that means most likely budget cuts and a cut in workers lowering job rates. Which plays into the whole new way of reform, our economy floats not on factories and industry but consumerism.
http://www.heritage.org/index/country/unitedstates http://www.shmoop.com/1950s/economy.html In the United States to economy changes so much at this moment the economy is starting to grow from its original bad economy. In the 1950s the economy was great we had just ended a war tons of immigrants have been flocking to the U.S for job opportunity. Since 2008 the economy in the us has dropped in a massive amount and the countries dept has also increased which has in the end made things even worse. The economy is controlled by how much money is being spent and how the government regulates the economy also. In the 1950 everyone was spending money whether on new cars or new appliances. Also in the 1950s consumerism had just really gotten started and that was a big part of how much better the economy was back then to today. Right now in 2013 the United States economy is starting to improve from the way it was real estates picking back up and so is the rest of the country.
http://theeconomiccollapseblog.com/archives/america-1950-vs-america-2012 http://www.shmoop.com/1950s/economy.html In these articles it talks about how the economy was better in the 1950s than now in american. If the economy was to go back to they way it was when everyone that wanted a job had one and there was less debt we would have to give up internet and limiting media companies. It also talks about how Eisenhower did a lot in finding the right balance of spending and budget and taxes. It also helped back then because we weren't trying to recover from the war like other European countries. Things were also less expensive in the 1950s, the living standard was higher and the debt was lower.

The first article that I read was talking about the unemployment rate in Florida and how it is at a very high rate. It is at the worst it has been since 2008. Even the jobs that do happen to be open haven’t been recognized as jobs with great benefits and life plans which contribute to the troubles in the economy. The other article that I read discussed the same thing but in California. It stated that employers slowed down on hiring people because the economy makes it hard to pay all the employees. Another thing contributing to the unemployment problem is the federal budget cuts. Even though the percent of people that are out of jobs are decreasing at a slow pace there are still a lot of people out of work. This relates to back in the day when black people were struggling to get jobs. They had to struggle to do everything and even if they were in a race for a job and there was a white person going to its pretty obvious who would get the job. Eventually though they saw better days and started to acquire jobs and hopefully that will happen with the people today.
President John F. Kennedy had a campaign promise, and that promise was to get America moving again, which referred to America’s economy. JFK kept his promise and the nation started to turn around. Minimum wage went from $1.00 to $1.25, an increase of social security benefits to a larger pool of people, and federal funding for home building and slum eradication. In 1963 inflation was stable, corporate profits were at a record high, and the stock market had rebounded, but unemployment was at 5.7% which was too high for JFK. After JFK’s death President LBJ inherited a strong economy. Because of the strong base JFK left the nation in LBJ was able to get more money for government spending however inflation was becoming a problem in 1965. The economy continued to grow throughout the 1960s even with the election of Richard Nixon in 1968. During this time the government played several economic roles; a consumer, and employer, a regulator, and a social welfare agency. As a consumer the government put billions of dollars into the economy by supporting scientific research (space travel), buying military equipment (Vietnam), building highways, and competing with the Soviet Union (arms race, space race, cold war). By the end of the decade the average Americans income had increased 50%.

http://1950immigration.wordpress.com/about/ http://www.endillegalimmigration.com/History_of_Illegal_Immigration_in_US/ Immigrants in the 1950’s were a main factor for the economy. Besides having the African Americans, America did not want to do labor work. Such as cleaning, tile working; cement digging, and other things. The Irish race was one of the few who came to America. Since America was one of the countries that you could come to work, make money more immigrants shipped over. After World War 2, since most of the damage happened in the Chinese economies, immigration increased from European, and Spanish speaking Asian Countries. Since all of these immigrants came there was a domestic controversy of fearing Communism. Unlikely of that would happen, more Mexicans became to ship and take place in America. In the early 1930s when the Stock market crashed there were less immigrants, but more economic problems. Most people frown upon immigrants because they take the jobs of what most Americans could have. In my thought immigrants do the labor work, which half of the economy would dislike to do, or wouldn’t do it at all.

My two articles deal with unemployment in the U.S. The first article talks about how the unemployment is at one of the lowest points right now. Something that really caught my attention was when it mentioned,” 165,000 jobs were created in April, the country remains more than 2.5 million jobs short of the 138 million jobs it had in December 2007”. That’s a lot of jobs still missing and a lot of Americans unemployed. The article also says that the unemployment rate hasn’t been this low since 1979. The Second article is again about unemployment in the U.S. Although it has to do with more of the immigrants living here. The rate fell to 8.1% in 2012 the article says and it follows by saying that, that’s the same as the jobless level for people born in America. It’s the first time in a few years that their rate isn’t higher than white Americans. So for immigrants the unemployment rate has actually gotten a little better from the way the article is worded.
The articles that I read about talked about how a top Russian economist and governor adviser abruptly stepped down from his position and left the country. He left the country along with many other important government officials because the new president of the communist country. He left because he was being drug into a controversy over an oil drilling. This does not relate to class but it is interesting to hear about how Russian government officials are leaving because they are being accused of something that they did not do. They are just too big of baby’s to prove that they had nothing to do with the drillings. The second article that I read talked about how the United States government is expanding its broad-based economic growth and facial through tax reform. The government is going to start forcing on the taxation of the higher class instead of the lower class because they don’t have as much money as the higher class. It explains that most of the taxation money is coming from the middle class. http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/economy/report/2013/05/29/64555/supporting-broad-based-economic-growth-and-fiscal-responsibility-through-tax-reform/ http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323855804578511452388926008.html

Marijuana is one of the most illicit drugs in America that is being used. In the first article it said that nearly 17 million people are properly using marijuana, and 354,000 people are entering emergency rooms annually with a primary marijuana problem. Marijuana should not be legalized in America, because of the crime justice. The second article talked about, since there is a limit on alcohol use there will have to be the same consequences with marijuana. Jails all over are filled with prisoners that are convicted of drunk driving. All of a sudden if marijuana was legal and there were limits to smoking before driving, the capacity of jails would dramatically increase. Marijuana convicts will lead to more money going towards jails, and America is already in debt, and paying for more crime annuals, will be the last thing that the government would want to do. Also if marijuana was legal the price would automatically decrease, and if that would ever happen the tax revenue would offset by higher social costs. I’m not the one to decide, I know some people enjoy the effect that marijuana gives you, but believe it or not it could hurt the economy and government as well.
